Project Forgiveness

Well, now, this is interesting. The National Jewish Outreach Program has created a blog for folks to share their forgiveness in preparation for the High Holidays. Like the very popular PostSecret, it is a place for people to share once-secret thoughts anonymously.The NJOP gives it a Jewish twist… pre-Yom Kippur exercise in forgiveness.
Gotta admit, there’s a real fascination with this kind of stuff. Who among us isn’t interested in others’ deepest, darkest secrets? isn’t that why certain magazines, tabloids and television shows exist? For some, isn’t that why the Internet exists?
So, I perused some of the entries. It doesn’t feel so good to read them. Some of them don’t feel like they’re really requests for forgiveness, and some of them are so, well, personal, that I’m uncomfortable with reading them (I guess you can just say, well then don’t read them). On the other hand, I’m enough of a voyeur that it’s hard not to read. Like the proverbial gory accident on the highway, you know that you should avert your eyes but you just can’t.

Debbie Harris is the director of educational technology at the Sager Solomon Schechter Day School in Northbrook, IL. Involved in Jewish education for over thirty years, she has an education degree from Northwestern University with a concentration in instructional media and a master’s degree in professional Jewish studies from Spertus Institute for Jewish Learning and Leadership. She is skilled in using and teaching desktop publishing, video editing, presentation and animation software; and consults and presents regularly on integrating technology into Judaic studies. She likes to knit, do calligraphy, sew, watercolor, paint fabric and just generally play with fun toys like scrapbooking supplies and anything with texture. Debbie travels to California every summer to paint tallitot with high school aged campers. Finally, she is incredibly proud of her two daughters; Lori, who teaches English at a community college; and Allie, who is the director of the URJ’s Camp Newman in California.
